Donor Resource Center Coordinator I (2 Positions)

  • Based out of Itasca, IL, office
  • Full-time night shift (Non-Exempt)

This position is responsible for coordinating organ and tissue donation referrals in Gift of Hope’s fast-paced, 24 x 7 Donor Resource Center. The DRC fields and responds to all organ- and tissue donation-related referral calls from the 179 hospitals in Gift of Hope’s service area; coordinates communication among hospital personnel and the Gift of Hope team; approaches families for tissue donation; and coordinates the allocation of donor kidneys and pancreases.

The work schedule for this position is 7 p.m. – 7 a.m.
In addition to supporting Gift of Hope’s mission and vision and adhering to its values, this position is responsible for carrying out the following responsibilities:

  • Collecting hospital and patient information pre-screening criteria on all incoming donor-related calls and documenting this information in Gift of Hope's Referral Management System.
  • Using the RMS to evaluate incoming organ, tissue and eye/cornea referral calls for donor suitability.
  • Discussing the suitability of marginal potential organ donors with Gift of Hope's Medical Director.
  • Dispatching staff for organ referrals as directed by the Referral Coordinator II/III or Supervisor.
  • Conducting and obtaining telephone consents for tissue donation and performing extensive medical/social history screenings.
  • Securing permission of county coroners or medical examiners as needed.
  • Recording the donation decision expressed by the person with legal authority to provide consent.
  • Documenting medical social histories according to established protocol.
  • Forwarding appropriate referrals of tissue and/or eye/cornea to respective eye and tissue banks in accordance with established protocols.
  • Placing status follow-up calls to hospital staff on pending organ and tissue referrals.
  • Entering information on all pending organ and tissue cases into the status board and updating the status board according to protocols.
  • Recording and communicating results of organ donor cultures to appropriate transplant centers according to Gift of Hope policy.
  • Maintaining a positive and professional manner when dealing with all Gift of Hope's customers.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate for this position will have a bachelor’s degree in a health- or science-related field. The candidate also will have:

  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to make sound clinical assessments in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications, especially Word and Excel.
