Promoting Donation

Looking for ways to jump-start your donation advocacy efforts in the African-American community? We’ve got just the thing for you. Here are 10 ideas you can put to work today to help increase minority donation rates.

10 Ideas To Promote Donation in the African-American Community

        1. Have your club or fraternal organization schedule a Gift of Hope or African-American Task Force guest speaker or a public display on organ and tissue donation.
        2. Leverage your community connections. Corporate partnerships and workplace programs can bring the donation message to many people at once.
        3. Have your company place inserts on donation in employee paychecks.
        4. Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper or blog encouraging people—minorities in particular—to become organ and tissue donors and explaining how to join the Illinois Organ/Tissue Donor Registry.
        5. Ask your local newspaper and radio and television stations to use our public service announcements to encourage people to register as donors.
        6. Write a letter to the CEO of your local community hospital thanking him/her for the staff’s work with Gift of Hope to make donation happen.
        7. Distribute donor education materials at community events such as block parties and health fairs. Use the online Registration Supply Kit form to register your events and request supplies to support your efforts.
        8. Ask your local high school to schedule “Organ & Tissue Donation: Get the Facts,” a free high school education program on donation.
        9. Contact your alma mater about distributing donation education materials to students or setting up a display during National Donate Life Month held each April. Or about participating in Donate Life Illinois’ annual Campus Campaign held each fall.
        10. Encourage your house of worship to participate in National Donor Sabbath held each November to bring donation to the attention of faith leaders, educate faith communities about donation and encourage people to register as donors.
