Local Celebrities Make National Debut at Rose Parade
The Donate Life Rose Parade Float in the 120 th Rose Parade will feature some familiar faces. Illinois Secretary of State, Jesse White, will be honored with a unique floragraph as one of the 14 stars on the Float. Donate Life Illinois volunteer and Chicago lung transplant recipient Steve Ferkau will be representing Illinois as he joins 25 other recipients and donor family members as riders on the Float. During his trip, Steve will be maintaining a video journal of his experiences on his own YouTube channel as well as providing updates to post on the DLI blog. National Minority Donor Awareness Day to Be Observed August 1 Minorities Account for 56% of Those Awaiting Organ Transplants in Illinois Elmhurst, Ill. (Aug. 1, 2008) - In observance of National Minority Donor Awareness Day, Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network calls attention to the more than 2,600 minority individuals awaiting lifesaving organ transplants in Illinois. This number reflects 56 percent of those waiting in Illinois.

(October 10, 2007)—The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded 22 hospitals in Illinois with the national Medal of Honor for their work in saving and enhancing lives through organ and tissue donation. The hospitals all work with Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network, the organ procurement organization that coordinates organ and tissue donation in the northern three quarters of Illinois and northwest Indiana, and were among 392 hospitals across the country honored for exemplary leadership and commitment to organ donors, donor families, and the nearly 100,000 patients on the national transplant waiting list.
Religious leaders show interfaith support for lifesaving cause
CHICAGO (Oct. 5, 2007) - Houses of worship of all faiths across Illinois will take time next month to recognize the lifesaving benefits of organ donation and encourage registration in Illinois’ new donor registry. The call to action will occur on Nov. 9-11 during National Donor Sabbath—an annual observance intended to raise awareness, through religious communities, of the urgent need for organ and tissue donation.
