Move Over Lance Armstrong...The Evanston Chapter is passing...!
Downtown Evanston was transformed into a mini Tour de France event on July 20th. Hundreds of cyclists from Olympic hopefuls to weekend warriors converged to make laps around the tricky course. The Evanston Chapter was invited to partner with the event title sponsor, Evanston Northwestern Healthcare, to host a registration table. The Chapter also had the opportunity to speak to the crowd in between events, and they received two one-minute live PSAs during the Pro races. Pam, Dara and the volunteer team—Greg and Janet Harris, Debbie Nichols (& nephew) and Debbie Wallace registered 78 people. GREAT WORK! It turned out to be a beautiful day and everyone enjoyed the experience. We know that if we had kept our table open all night, we could have registered more people, so the need is great! Keep spinning towards the next Evanston event and stay tuned for more great partnership stories with Evanston Northwestern Healthcare!
The Black Women’s Expo!
August 1st - 3rd was the BIG Expo weekend in Chicago and even though there have been a few changes over the last year, hundreds of women make this event a must-do on their event calendar. Looking for a new purse or a piece of jewelry? There are plenty of vendors and you can make a deal. Everything from weight-loss products, clothing and skin care products or education and information on city services could be found at this event. Motivational workshops from Les Brown, comic relief from Dick Gregory and soulful sounds from some top recording artists make this a great time for the whole family. New to the event this year, a steppers circle and a Spa section where you were able to get a quick massage or manicure for an affordable price. Let’s not forget about the Task Force volunteers that showed up and helped register 218 people and passed out information to hundreds more over the three-day event. A BIG note of thanks to all of the volunteers that donated their time to this weekend to help us register people. Our partners, members of the Windy City Links, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., the Black Nurses Association, and Gift of Hope staff—WE THANK YOU and hope you enjoyed your Expo volunteer experience.
Save time for this event next year....

A Hospital Focus
August 1st was National Minority Donor Awareness Day, a time when communities of color really focus on donor awareness in local neighborhoods. This year the Task Force hosted donor registration tables at several local hospitals with the help of the Gift of Hope Hospital Development team. We covered these community hospitals/locations: Provident, Norwegian American, Weiss Memorial, St. Mary of Nazareth, University of Chicago, the Thompson Center, downtown Chicago, and Methodist North & South Lake Centers in Gary, Ind. Minorities wait 3-4 times longer than most others for kidney transplants and unfortunately, people are dying while waiting for lifesaving transplants. It is important to make sure that you register your decision to become an organ donor and tell your family and friends to consider doing the same.
