Thousands of people are working to increase organ and tissue donation and transplantation in the African-American community, thanks to the efforts of our African-American Task Force.
With more than 150 members, our Task Force volunteers focus on education in the African-American community through its Central Illinois, Chicago, Evanston, North Shore, Northwest Indiana, Rockford, South Suburban and West Suburban chapters.
African-Americans alone make up 35 percent of the more than 79,000 patients on the national kidney transplant waiting list. To increase the likelihood of a successful transplant, a well-matched organ will often come from a donor of the same race. But a shortage of African-American donors makes it difficult to find well-matched kidneys for minority patients. Education is the key!
Our AATF members include transplant recipients, donor family members, healthcare professionals and others with an interest in promoting organ and tissue donation. Join our important work today! Contact us through the Gift of Hope Office of Community Affairs at 630/758-2732.
Upon joining our AATF, volunteers attend an orientation and training program to learn more about Gift of Hope, our public education messages and the facts about organ and tissue donation.
Then, you’ll connect with other volunteers in your AATF chapter, and coordinate donor education programs for civic groups, churches and other organizations in the African-American community.
