Approximately 2.5 million lifesaving and life-enhancing tissue transplants are performed each year in the United States. Though statistics may show us the impact in numbers, they cannot measure the significance that a gift of tissue donation has on the recipient’s quality of life. It can help burn victims heal, athletes and military personnel recover from injuries and help countless others walk or see again.

We recently heard from a tissue transplant recipient who reached out to the family of their tissue donor with a heartfelt letter of gratitude. It inspired all of us at Gift of Hope and we hope it inspires you too.

Dear Donor Family,

I am writing to thank you for the kind and generous gift from your loved one. I am sorry for your loss, but I want you to know your decision to donate has influenced my life in ways that are difficult to express.

I needed a tissue transplant following a motorcycle accident that broke bones and severed tendons. The only description that feels appropriate for the donation that has been made, is one of grace.

Because of your grace…I can again run and play with my children and grandchildren.

Because of your grace…I will continue to work in a field that requires superior leg stability, allowing me to provide for my family.

Because of your grace…I can continue to travel the world in my vocation, attempting to leave the destinations better than I have found them.

Because of your grace…I will continue to mentor and develop a new generation of young adults.

Because of your grace…I can volunteer my time, energy, and physical capabilities to worthy people, places and causes.

Because of your grace…I will not walk impeded with a limp, nor limiting ability.

Because of your grace…I can move forward in life recognizing the inherent good that is all around us, but often overlooked.

Because of your grace…I thank you, without reserve, for your gift.

In heartfelt wishes for your good health, prosperity, and happiness.

  A grateful recipient
