Encourage CMS to Address Concerns with
Proposed Regulations Governing OPOs
Last year, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published proposed new regulations governing Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs). OPOs – including Gift of Hope – coordinate organ and tissue donation, provide public education, work every day to honor the legacy of heroic donors who give the gift of life and provide support and guidance to donor families during their unimaginable loss. Unfortunately, the new regulations as proposed could potentially result in 75% of OPOs closing in one year. Inevitably, these closures would result in significant damage to our world-class organ and tissue donation system and cost American lives.
Gift of Hope and the OPO community support valid and continually improving performance regulations. We encourage CMS to consider changes to the proposed regulations to ensure fair treatment and an opportunity for continual performance improvement.
