Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network is partnering with Norwegian American Hospital to commission an artist or team of artists to design and paint a mural in the Humboldt Park neighborhood — transforming a blank brick wall into a mural of hope and life.

Mural Goals:

This is the first mural project to be commissioned in collaboration with our hospital partner and will help set the tone for future public wall initiatives. The purpose of our collaboration is to raise donation awareness and engage our communities in honoring the legacy of those who have offered the gift of life through organ and tissue donation. Additionally, it encourages community residents to register as donors in the Illinois Organ/Tissue Donor Registry.

PROJECT LOCATION

Norwegian American Hospital

1044 N. Francisco Ave., Chicago.

Mural wall on W. Thomas St. at Richmond St

DESCRIPTION OF SITE

Light brick wall measuring approximately 114’ wide x 15’ high. Uninterrupted section with seven brick-filled windows is approximately 70’ wide. Interrupted section with three glass windows is approximately 44’ wide. There is no requirement to use the entire wall.

PROJECT BRIEF

Location:  This location was chosen due to its visibility to families visiting Norwegian American Hospital. The wall is on the north side of the hospital building on W. Thomas St. at Richmond St. The hospital has given permission to the use of the space.

Theme and Style:  The title of the mural, “Give Hope – Give Life,” depicts the theme of the art mural: The decision to become an organ and tissue donor benefits donors and donor family members and offers hope for a new life to recipients, recipients’ family members and the community. The artist will be encouraged to explore his or her creativity in the design and style of the art mural, keeping in mind that the finished product will be exposed to the elements for an undetermined amount of time and that there is limited funding for ongoing maintenance. Although the intention of the art mural installation is to be permanent, the actual lifespan of the mural is unknown and will be classified as “temporary.”

Commission:  Call for Proposals from artists will be published electronically for the design and painting of a mural that will transform the hospital’s blank brick wall into a mural inspiring hope and life. The mural should be original, one of a kind and a new work. If known images are used, the artist will be responsible for obtaining all copyright permission and paying all license fees. Copies of permissions and licenses must be provided to Gift of Hope and Norwegian American Hospital.
