Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network is partnering with The Loretto Hospital to commission an artist or team of artists to design and paint a donation-themed mural that will transform a blank brick wall into artwork that inspires hope and life.

The mural will be located at The Loretto Hospital, 645 S. Central Ave., Chicago. On the corner of S. Central Ave. and W. Flournoy St. The brick wall measures approximately 26.5’ wide by 71’ high.  The wall faces southwest, and the top half is visible from the Eisenhower (I-290) heading East.

Art Goals:

The goal of this collaboration is to raise donation awareness and engage our communities in honoring the legacy of those who have given the gift of life through organ & tissue donation.  Learn more about our  work and mission .

Loretto has permitted the use of the hospital wall by the main entrance as the canvas for the public art mural installation.  The wall faces southwest and highly visible by pedestrians and motorist, including motorists heading East on the Eisenhower.  There is no requirement to use the entire wall.

Theme and Style:

The title of the mural “Hope & Life for Everyone” depicts the motif for the mural art: The decision to become an organ and tissue donor benefits donors and donor family members and offers hope for a new life to recipients, recipients’ family members and the community.  The art concept should aim to inspire everyone.  The words HOPE and/or LIFE may be used, but not required.

The artist is encouraged to explore their creativity in the design and style of the art mural keeping in mind that the finished product will be exposed to the elements for an undetermined amount of time and that there is limited funding for ongoing maintenance.  Although the art mural installation intends to remain permanent, the actual lifespan of the mural is unknown and will be classified as “temporary.”

The mural concept should be original, one of a kind, and new work.  If known images are used, the artist is responsible for obtaining all copyright permission and paying all license fees.  Copies of any permissions and licenses must be provided to Gift of Hope and The Loretto Hospital.

The unveiling and dedication ceremony will be hosted once the art mural installation is complete.  Donor families, community members, elected officials, hospital and Gift of Hope staff will be invited to attend.

Restrictions on mural art: Business names, logos, branded tags, acronyms, trademarks, and any commercial, religious, or political advertising is prohibited.
